{"id":7915,"date":"2023-08-29T06:04:14","date_gmt":"2023-08-29T06:04:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/angolanembassy-nga.ao\/?p=7915"},"modified":"2023-08-29T06:04:15","modified_gmt":"2023-08-29T06:04:15","slug":"niger-coup-france-defies-juntas-order-for-ambassador-to-leave-niamey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/angolanembassy-nga.ao\/?p=7915","title":{"rendered":"Niger coup: France defies junta\u2019s order for ambassador to leave Niamey"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Tunde Oso (with agency reports) &amp; Adeola Badru<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FRANCE\u2019S ambassador to Niger is still in the coup-hit Sahel country despite an ultimatum from the new army leaders to leave his post, French President Emmanuel Macron said Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a major foreign policy speech to ambassadors in Paris, Macron confirmed that French envoy Sylvain Itte was listening in from Niger capital Niamey despite being given a 48-hour deadline to leave the country last Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-eu-declares-full-support-for-french-ambassador\">EU declares \u2018full support\u2019 for French ambassador<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the European Union on Monday expressed its \u201cfull support\u201d for the French ambassador to Niger, after the soldiers who seized power in the country demanded his departure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe decision of the putschists to expel the French ambassador is a new provocation which cannot in any way help to find a diplomatic solution to the current crisis,\u201d said Nabila Massrali, EU spokeswoman for foreign affairs, adding that the EU \u201cdoes not recognise\u201d the authorities that seized power in Niger on July 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Niger leader\u2019s party warns of post-coup bid to \u2018divide\u2019 it<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, militants within Niger\u2019s ex-ruling party have become embroiled in a campaign to divide it since the president was overthrown, the Nigerien Party for Democracy and Socialism (PNDS) said yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur party is the victim of a campaign to divide it\u201d, based on \u201cskilfully filtered rumours\u201d on social media and in the press, the party said in a letter to its officials.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter admitted that the party\u2019s own activists have been caught up in the campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social networks have suggested Bazoum\u2019s predecessor Mahamadou Issoufou had a role in the coup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTotally false,\u201d said Issoufou in an interview with Jeune Afrique magazine on August 17. He called for Bazoum to be restored to office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the coup, the party has \u201cfaced several attacks aimed at weakening it\u201d, the letter noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The attacks include bans on demonstrations and meetings which deprive it of \u201cthe classic means of struggle\u2026 to re-establish constitutional order\u201d and set free Bazoum and his family, the letter added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The day of the putsch, security forces dispersed a protest by Bazoum\u2019s supporters.<br>The party urged its militants \u201cnot to allow yourselves to be\u2026 distracted by the lies and rumours Stay mobilised to fight against the putschists\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrance and its diplomats have faced particularly difficult situations in some countries in recent months, from Sudan, where France has been exemplary, to Niger at this very moment and I applaud your colleague and your colleagues who are listening from their posts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Niger President Mohamed Bazoum was toppled on July 26 and has been detained along with his family at the presidential palace in a coup that has been condemned by France and most of Niger\u2019s neighbours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, the new Niger regime announced that French ambassador Itte had 48 hours to leave, saying he had refused to meet with the new rulers and citing French government actions that were \u201ccontrary to the interests of Niger\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Macron insisted that France would not change position in condemning the coup and offering support to Bazoum, stressing he had been democratically elected and was being \u201ccourageous\u201d by refusing to resign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur policy is clear: we do not recognise the putschists,\u201d Macron said, adding that they were \u201cabandoning the fight against terrorism\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The impoverished Sahel region, which lies south of the Sahara, has suffered what Macron called an \u201cepidemic\u201d of coups in recent years, with military regimes replacing elected governments in Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea as well as Niger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The changes have led to the creation of new military governments hostile to France, a former colonial power in West Africa which has troops across the region engaged in fighting Islamist groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>France intervened militarily to beat back advancing extremists in Mali in 2013 at the request of the then Malian government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current military regimes in Mali and Burkina Faso have forged closer ties with Russia, which Macron referred to as a \u201cneo-imperialist\u201d power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t give ground to the narrative used by the putschists which boils down to saying, \u2018our enemy has become France\u2019,\u201d said Macron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Macron said the new regime in Niger was bad for local people because the \u201cputschists are putting them in danger because they are abandoning the fight against terrorism, because they are abandoning good economic policies, and they are in the process of losing international financing which enabled them to emerge from poverty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>France needed an approach in Africa of \u201cneither paternalism, not weakness,\u201d he added.<br>Germany also expressed concerns Monday about the anti-French mood in Niger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are concerned that the military is stirring things up against the French and we are keeping a watchful eye on things,\u201d Foreign Ministry spokesman Christian Wagner told a government press conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>France has about 1,500 troops in Niger helping local forces fight Islamic extremists.
